DuringΒ my trip to Italy last year, I spent a couple of days in a town called Assisi, which is located in the Umbria region in central Italy. The town itself is absolutely beautiful and filled with religious history.
I, myself, am not religious, but churches and cathedrals never cease to fascinate me. This basilica was built in honor of St. Francis, who was from Assisi (born and died there). His remains are actually interred in the crypt of the basilica. This place is a very important pilgrimage site in Italy. When I visited, there was a man who crawled up all the steps (you’ll see in the pictures) on his knees!
The architecture of this basilica is a mix of Romanesque and Gothic styles, and it is absolutely breathtaking. I came here just as the sun was setting and you really feel a sense of wonder as you gaze out into the hills.
The inside of the basilica is beautiful as well, but I didn’t get a chance to take any photos. I can’t remember if it’s because they didn’t allow photography or if I was just too caught up admiring the paintings on the ceilings. But I hope you enjoyed the pictures I did take. Thanks so much for reading! π On a side note, I’ll be choosing the winner of the giveaway today and contacting themΒ shortly after. Thank you to everyone who participated!

Cathedrals fascinate me too. Guess it must be all the history of love, passion, devotion, art, seeped in the walls. Beautiful shots!
