A couple weeks ago, I pre-ordered Everlane’s Modern Babo. Here’s my review! This shoe is a very…interesting concept. Simply put, it’s a leather shoe that you wear with the heel down. But then why the heel at all, right? I mean at $145….you’re paying quite a lot of money to just step on and ruin the heel. At first I thought that the shoe was made out of a special leather material or something, such that the heel wouldn’t get ruined even if you walked on them all the time. Everlane advertises this shoe as one that can be worn heel up OR down, soΒ can you really blame me? BUT, after examining the shoe first hand, I feel like you have to choose one or the other. The shoe comes with the heel already down, and even after walking on it for just a day, you can see creases starting to form in the heel. Anyway, today I’m gonna take you guys through my unboxing experience (the packaging is super pretty lol).
In the end, I still decided to keep the shoe. Despite the silly impracticality of the heel, I can sort of see the appeal. The Modern Babo was inspired by the Moroccan Babouche, which are basically slipper-type shoes that have the heel pressed down. That’s just the style. When you combine that effortless style with a very modern looking, well-crafted leather shoe, let’s just say you get something very different! The shoes look very nice, and are super comfortable to walk in! It’s like having the best of both worlds. And I guess if you want the best of THREE worlds, you COULD technically wear them with the heel up, although honestly, in my opinion, I feel like that makes the shoes look like those water shoes that you wear when walking through tide pools or something. I really don’t think these shoes were meant to be worn heel-up. It was probably just an extra two-in-one advertising gimmick. The cut of the heel isn’t very flattering, so if you buy these shoes, buy them because you want to wear them with the heel down.
I feel like these shoes also run a bit large (not 100% sure on this though it could just be me). I usually range from a size 8 to 8.5. I went with a size 8 for this shoe, and when I wear it slip-on style, it’s just right. I did try wearing it with the heel up…and it’s a little too big for me. It is a pretty narrow fit, and I feel like the shoes look pointier in person, which could be good or bad depending on your personal taste.
My overall opinion? If I didn’t have $75 in Everlane credit, I probably wouldn’t have bought the shoe. It is quite pricey and I still cringe a little every time I step on the heel. But, it is a very unique concept, and I like how the modern look is tied in with a very casual vibe. Fun fact: I actually found out from one of my friends that “babo” means fool in Korean. I think it’s a very appropriate name, haha. Very fitting for such an interesting yetΒ kind-of impractical concept. But all in all, I do think I will grow to love these shoes! I really love the look of the show with the heel down and I agree if you wore it up there is a similarity to those water shoes. Such classic shoe though.
